People with disabilities, families, advocates, and providers have helped shape this work.
The Department plans to post the draft waiver for public comment soon.
When the new waiver launches, new services and new rates will also begin. These rates will include tiered levels based on support needs identified from the SIS-A. Because of this, everyone enrolled in Section 21, Section 29, or the new Lifespan waiver will need to complete a SIS-A assessment.
Since many people will need an assessment, the Department will begin increasing the number of assessments completed each month starting in February and March 2026.
To learn how this increase will work, how scheduling will happen, and what to expect during the assessment, please register to join one of the following webinars.

Families, Participants, and Guardians:

These sessions will provide an overview of how the scheduling process and assessment will work.

Please register to attend here (choose one):

Tuesday, 3/3, 1pm-2pm - https://mainestate.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_lHF1OIXmSiuVD4LlTiXkKA

Friday, 3/6, 3:30pm-4:30pm - https://mainestate.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_IPHIszYESAmUvnKME42vyw

Provider Agency Homes:

This session will describe the purpose and use of the SIS-A assessment to inform levels of supports needs.

Friday, 2/27, 10am-11am - Please register to attend here:

https://mainestate.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_p4rvLWuZTGSzzUF8FKfPJg

Case Managers and Non-Residential Service Planners:

This session will describe the purpose and use of the SIS-A assessment to inform levels of supports needs.

Wednesday, 2/25, 11am-12pm - Please register to attend here:

https://mainestate.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_yLsvW984TTC_fJ12ie5Jjw

If you are unable to attend these sessions, recordings will be posted afterward on the Office of Aging and Disability Services (OADS) web page: SIS-A Implementation Project | Department of Health and Human Services
If you need an accommodation or support to take part in one or more of these meetings, please contact April.Keyes@maine.gov. It is a guided conversation about the supports you need to be safe, healthy, and successful in daily life.

Most interviews take about 2-3 hours (breaks are OK).

You can have people who know you well join you (guardian/family, case manager, staff). They need to have known you for more than three months.

Why are we doing this?
The Department is using the SIS-A for all individuals on Sections 21 and 29, as well as Lifespan. The SIS-A provides additional information to support the person-centered planning process. Also, Maine is using the SIS-A so providers can be paid based on the level of assessed support needs across several services for the people they support. For those with higher needs, the provider can receive a higher reimbursement. Taking an assessment now can prevent later backlogs of assessments. It is important that you schedule an assessment with Maximus.
How to get ready (simple tips)

Think about how your family and provider(s) support you each day; both regular days and on a hard day, especially if hard days are frequent.

Bring people who know you best and can help you describe the services and supports and what you need to live your best life.

Tell the scheduler what you need to be comfortable (breaks, communication supports, etc.).

Questions or need to schedule?
Maximus Maine SIS Help Desk: 833-771-4639 | Maine-SIS@maximus.com
Look for an invitation soon to join SIS-A information sessions via Zoom in late February, beginning of March.

Follow Up to OADS Lifespan Waiver Presentations

https://www.maineparentcoalition.org/postings/follow-up-to-oads-lifespan-waiver-presentations

https://www.maineparentcoalition.org/postings/follow-up-to-oads-lifespan-waiver-presentations#comments

Uncategorized

Home and Community Based Supports (HCBS) Sections 18, 20, 21, 29, and New Lifespan Waiver: Comment Summary with Department Response and Final Draft Rate ModelsThe final draft rate models for Sections 18, 20, 21, 29, the new Lifespan Waiver, and a summary of all comments resulting from the public forum from April 14, 2025, is available on the MaineCare Rate System Reform webpage, along with all related notices and presented materials to date.
