Supported Decision-Making (SDM) is a series of relationships, practices, arrangements, and agreements designed to assist an individual with a disability to make and communicate to others decisions about their life. In July 2019, Maine’s new Probate Code will go into effect. This new law requires evidence that the needs of the individual cannot be met by less restrictive alternatives to guardianship, including use of appropriate supportive services, technological assistance or supported decision making.
